How do I dye synthetic or rubber shoes with Rit Dye?Updated a month ago
How do I dye shoes using the dip-dye method?
Prepare the Dyebath
- Fill a stainless steel pot with 3 gallons of water and heat to 170°F.
- Do not place shoes directly into boiling water, as excessive heat can affect their structure.
Transfer to a Dyeing Container
- Wearing protective gloves, carefully pour the hot water into a large plastic container (big enough to fit both shoes).
- Shake Rit DyeMore well before adding it to the dyebath.
Dyeing Process
- If dyeing both shoes together, add them at the same time and stir occasionally for about 10 minutes or until the desired color is reached.
- If dyeing one shoe at a time, prepare a fresh dyebath for the second shoe to ensure even color. The first shoe will absorb most of the pigment, leaving the second one with a weaker color.
After Dyeing
- If the adhesive loosens during dyeing, press the parts back together and clamp or weigh them down until dry to re-secure them.
