How to use Rit All-Purpose DyeUpdated 10 days ago

Rit All-Purpose Dye works best on natural fabrics like cotton, linen, wool, silk, and ramie. It also dyes rayon and nylon. If your fabric has more than 35% synthetic fibers (polyester, acrylic, or acetate), you’ll need to use Rit DyeMore instead.

General Steps:

  1. Prep your item:

    • Remove stains and prewash in warm, soapy water (no fabric softener).

    • Protect your workspace with plastic and wear rubber gloves.

  2. Make the dyebath:

    • Use 3 gallons of hot water (140°F) per pound of fabric.

    • For cotton/linen/rayon/ramie → add 1 cup of salt.

    • For silk/wool/nylon → add 1 cup of vinegar.

    • Add 1 tsp dish detergent to help level the color.

  3. Add the dye:

    • Shake liquid dye well (or dissolve powder in 2 cups hot water).

    • Pour into the bath and stir thoroughly.

    • Test color with a paper towel, adjust with more dye or water.

  4. Dye your item:

    • Wet fabric first, then submerge.

    • Stir continuously, especially during the first 10 minutes.

    • Keep in bath 10 min to 1 hour (depending on fiber content).

    • Nylon dyes quickly and darker, so monitor closely.

  5. Finish up:

    • Remove once desired shade is reached (fabric looks darker when wet).

    • Rinse in cool water until clear.

    • Wash in warm water with mild detergent, then dry.

Pro Tip: Use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative right after dyeing to lock in color and prevent bleeding.
